Google Maps in Korea: What to Use Instead (2026 Guide)
Google Maps can miss transit and walking detail in Korea. Use Naver Map or KakaoMap for the subway ride, and keep Google for place names you already know.

Google Maps still finds major stations and hotels in Seoul. It often fails at the job you need after you land: which subway exit, which bus, and how long the walk is between them. Do not discover that in the airport arrivals hall.
Install Naver Map or KakaoMap on wifi before the flight. Both are Korean map apps with English menus. Sign-in can wait. Download the app, search your hotel, and confirm a route appears.
How to use it on the first ride
- Search the hotel by its English name, then check the Korean name underneath so you can show it to a driver.
- Choose public transit, not driving.
- Read the line color and the exit number out loud before you leave the car. Seoul stations have many exits, and the wrong one can be a long walk.
- If the two apps disagree, follow the one that names a subway line and an exit. Recheck on the station sign.
The T-money guide covers the tap. The map only tells you which gate to walk toward.
What Google is still good for
Use Google for a restaurant or museum you already saved, then paste the Korean name into Naver Map for the route. Walking directions that skip alleys are the usual failure. If a route says you cannot walk somewhere locals clearly walk, trust the Korean app.
Taxi apps are a separate install. Kakao T is the common one for calling a cab. You can also hail a metered taxi and show the Korean address on your phone. Agree on the meter, not a flat price offered at the curb, unless you are in an official taxi line that posts the fare.
