eSIM vs Pocket Wi-Fi vs Roaming in Korea (2026 Guide)

Pick an eSIM if your phone supports it, a pocket Wi-Fi if several people share one connection, or roaming if you want the fewest steps. Prices are not listed here.

You need data before you leave the airport, because the map apps and the hotel address live on your phone. There are three ways to get it. This guide does not list prices. Provider rates change every week, and a number copied here would be wrong by the time you book.

eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM you install on an unlocked phone. You keep your home number for calls and texts, and you add Korean data beside it. Buy it before the flight if the provider activates on arrival, and install it while you still have airport or plane wifi.

Choose this when you travel alone or as a couple with two phones that both support eSIM. You are not carrying a second device, and you are not hunting a pickup counter.

Skip it when the phone is locked to a carrier or has no eSIM slot. A staff member at home can confirm that. Do not find out at the baggage carousel.

Pocket Wi-Fi

A pocket Wi-Fi is a small router you pick up at the airport and return when you leave. Several phones share one connection. That is the point of it: one rental for a family.

The cost is the extra object. It needs a charge, and you have to return it. Miss the return counter and the deposit rules are the rental company’s, not a number this site will guess. Read the pickup terminal and the return desk on the booking before you pay.

Roaming

Roaming is the data add-on from the carrier you already pay. It is the fewest steps: you land and turn it on. It is often the expensive option, which is why people compare the other two. Ask your carrier for the Korea daily or weekly pass and the fair-use cap. If they will not quote it in writing, do not assume the trip will stay cheap.

What to decide

If this is you Choose
Unlocked phone, one or two travelers eSIM
Family sharing one connection Pocket Wi-Fi
You will not set anything up in advance Roaming, after you read your carrier’s price

None of these is a T-money card. Data does not pay the subway gate. Booking links for eSIM and pocket Wi-Fi are not on this page yet.
